A few months ago, my computer was attacked by the infamous whitesmoke translator virus. Maleware’s Anti Maleware removed the trojan and ive uninstalled the toolbar and translator. Unfortunatly, lasting effects still attack my computer. Browsers automaticcly redirect to dangerous web pages. Another thing is Microsoft update is disabled and i do not know how to get it started. My windows xp computer has not been updated in 2 months. Also, my soundboard keeps randomly turning off. Important processes such as windows firewall, help and support, and automatic updates are repeatedly turned off. I desperatly need my computer to be updates and to remove the virus… any suggestions?

Yes indeed, this malware is TDSS/TDL 4 related.
You should seek professional help. http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/
You can run this tool http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684, and run until it states you are clean, then run MBAM again
Because you have left this so long, probably more malware has been installed, hence the forum

I personally would reformat-reinstall windows, because sometimes a system gets owned by malware and it’s almost impossible to get all of the infection, especially a well designed rootkit that hides. If you are determined to try and clean the infections I would burn a couple of rescue disks to a stick or cd using another pc and run these disks on the infected machine. You could first though, download, run combofix in safe mode, “Safe Mode with Networking”…
I think you should use Hitman Pro http://www.surfright.nl/en and TDSSKiller tool from Kaspersky Lab http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684
